Today’s topic in our “Spreading God’s Word” blog compares some of the pope’s sayings with those of Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic church teaches that Peter is the rock (or foundation) upon which Christ built His church. This (erroneous) conclusion has been used by the Catholic church to attribute a very special and unique relationship between the suceeding popes and the Lord Jesus Christ.
However, the context for the cited passage points to the rock not being Peter, but rather Peter’s remarkable confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. The church’s foundation (or rock) is rooted in the spiritual truth that Jesus Christ is Lord. Scripture does not support attributing this foundation to Peter, then extending its influence across the ages to succeeding men.
Two conflicting beliefs each claiming to be biblically based, cannot both be true. At best only one can be, and both may be false. It seems reasonable therefore to compare a few of the Pope’s sayings and teachings with Christ’s. Let each determine for himself which is correct.
The Pope lets 800 million people refer to him as the Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church and The Holy Father.
Jesus said: “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” [Luke 14:11]
The Pope says he is infallible in matters of faith and morals.
Jesus said: “There shall be false teachers among you.” [2 Peter 2:1] God also declares “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” [1John 1:8]
The Pope runs his own self-governed nation called Vatican City that has its own Secretary of State who meets with ambassadors from other countries.
Jesus said: “My kingdom is not of this world.” [John 18:36]
The Pope has thousands of servants subordinate to himself called Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, priests, monks and nuns.
Jesus said: “Many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first,” [Matthew 19:30] and “And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.” [Mark 10:44]
The Pope controls immeasurable wealth.
Jesus said: “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” [Matthew 6:20]
Many millions are told the Pope is someone uniquely special to God. Similarly, from the beginning of time, many have been misled into believing charismatic men and women are somehow more in touch with God than themselves.
We all should be careful to whom we are listening when it comes to our eternal dwelling place. If we’re trusting in the teachings and traditions of men rather than in the teachings of God in the Bible, will we not find ourselves under the wrath of God for all eternity?
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” [Matthew 7:22-23]
